Singing Over Me

Some of my favorite memories of being a new mom are those quiet, still moments in the middle of the night or at dawn. The house would be hushed, the world asleep, and it was just me and my baby, cocooned in a bubble of tranquility. We’d share a connection that words can’t quite capture—a bond forged in the peacefulness of the night, as soft melodies of lullabies and nursery rhymes filled the room. My daughter or son would look up at me, eyes wide with curiosity, and I’d feel such a profound sense of love and joy.

In those moments, they didn’t understand the lyrics, but they felt the love in my voice. As they drifted back to sleep, I’d hold them close, cherishing every precious second. It’s these tender memories that come to mind when I read Zephaniah 3:17:

“The LORD your God in your midst,

The Mighty One, will save;

He will rejoice over you with gladness,

He will quiet you with His love,

He will rejoice over you with singing.”

What a beautiful image—God singing over us! Just like I soothed my babies with lullabies, God’s gentle melodies offer us comfort and hope. His voice, tender and full of love, calms our stormy lives. When we feel overwhelmed and lost, His divine tunes guide us to safety, filling our hearts with peace and joy.

There are times, of course, when we’re too caught up in our own distress to hear His song. We might be in the throes of our own worries, unable to feel His touch or hear His voice. But that doesn’t mean He isn’t there. Just like when my son was too upset to be immediately comforted by my lullabies—it didn’t mean I wasn’t holding and singing over him; he just needed time to settle.

Oh, friend, how different life feels when we remember that God sings over us. Allowing His peace to calm even the biggest crying fit, we can look up with wide, curious eyes of love. In our fast-paced world, it’s so easy to get swept up in the chaos and lose sight of what truly matters. But when we pause to remember that we are loved and cherished by our Creator, everything else fades into the background.

So, take a deep breath and soak in His love that surrounds you. Close your eyes for just a moment and listen for His song. Embrace the stillness and let His peace wash over you. Remember, you are not alone on this journey. You are a cherished child of God, and He is always with you, singing over you with love.
