Memorial Day Treats For Your Pup (and a Moment to Reflect)

Advertisements

Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer for many of us. It’s a time to enjoy warmer weather, backyard barbecues, and, yes, even spoil our furry best friends with a special treat. But amidst all the grilling and sun-soaked fun, it’s important to pause and reflect on the true meaning of the day.

Memorial Day stems from a tradition dating back to the aftermath of the Civil War. Every spring, families and communities would come together to clean and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers, offering flowers and paying their respects. It began as “A Day of Remembrance.” Then, in the early 1970s, it became what we now call Memorial Day.

This month, as we honor the men and women who gave everything for the freedoms we often take for granted, I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to those brave individuals. We are grateful in more ways than words can express.

Now, as we gather with loved ones this Memorial Day, why not include our dogs in the celebration too? After all, they’re part of the family. Here are a couple of easy-to-make and refreshing pupsicle recipes that my four-legged companion, (Dingo my sweet girl, absolutely loved these.)

Why Make Your Own Pet Treats?

Before I jump into the recipes, you might be asking, “Why should I make treats when I can just buy them?” Well, here’s the thing. Store-bought treats can be convenient, but they often contain additives, artificial flavors, and preservatives that aren’t the healthiest for your pup. Plus, homemade treats allow you to control the ingredients and cater to your dog’s unique preferences or dietary needs. Think of it as your way of saying, “I love you” in the best (and tastiest) way possible!

And making treats at home? It’s surprisingly easy. All you need are a few pantry items, some freezer space, and a bit of love.

Recipe #1: Peanut Butter and Banana Pupsicles

These pupsicles are packed with flavor and nutrients that your furry friend will adore!

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Mash the ripe banana in a bowl.
  2. Add the peanut butter, flaxseed, and Greek yogurt to the same bowl and mix until well combined.
  3. Spoon the mixture into silicone molds or, if molds aren’t available, onto a cookie sheet in small dollops.
  4. Freeze overnight, then transfer the pupsicles to a freezer bag for easy storage.

Recipe #2: Peanut Butter and Veggie (or Fruit) Pupsicles

This recipe offers flexibility with fun, dog-safe fruits or veggies to suit your pup’s taste.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Peel and cut the fruit or veggies into small pieces.
  2. Mix the peanut butter and water together in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Place the fruit or veggie pieces at the bottom of each ice cube tray compartment.
  4. Pour the peanut butter-water mixture over the top until each compartment is filled.
  5. Freeze until solid, then transfer the pupsicles into a freezer bag for storage.

Celebrate Safely with Love

These pupsicles are a great way to keep your dog cool, happy, and healthy throughout the warmer months. Plus, there’s a special kind of joy that comes from watching your pup happily devour a treat you lovingly made just for them.

This Memorial Day, as you’re enjoying the festivities, take a moment to remember what it’s all about. While we cool off with iced lemonade and our dogs lick away at their pupsicles, let’s honor the soldiers who made it possible for us to enjoy the freedoms we cherish every day.

If you try these recipes, I’d love to hear how your pup liked them (bonus points if you share pics or videos!). Here’s to honoring, remembering, and—to borrow a lesson from our furry friends*—living in gratitude for all the good things in life. 🐾
