The Best Carrot Dogs for Your 4th of July BBQ (That You’ll Crave All Summer)

Just in time for your 4th of July BBQ… but honestly? These are so good, you’ll be making them long after the fireworks are over.

I’ll admit—when I first heard about carrot hot dogs, I was skeptical. Like… really skeptical. 😄
But stay with me on this one.

I originally came across this recipe on the Plexus blog (and even saw it featured on KTVK Arizona’s Family), and as a vegetarian who loves a good BBQ—but tries to avoid overly processed foods—I knew I had to give it a try.

And wow… I was hooked after the first bite.

I made a few tweaks to the original recipe to fit my taste, but the idea came from Plexus—and I just had to share it with you.

🥕 Why Carrot Dogs?

Not only are these surprisingly delicious, they’re also incredibly nourishing.

Carrots are a root vegetable packed with nutrients your body loves:

  • Rich in beta-carotene (converted to vitamin A)
  • Supports healthy vision, skin, and immune function
  • High in antioxidants to help protect your cells
  • Naturally sweet with a satisfying texture

They’re also incredibly versatile—perfect in everything from soups and salads to desserts… and now, your new favorite BBQ staple.

And bonus? Choosing plant-based options like this supports a more sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle 🌎

🌿 Ingredients

For the Marinade:

  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 Tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 4 tsp liquid smoke
  • 4–8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

For the Carrot Dogs:

  • 4 large carrots
  • 4 hot dog buns (check for vegan-friendly ingredients if needed)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

Step 1: Shape & Boil the Carrots

Bring a medium pot of water to a rolling boil.

  • Peel carrots and trim ends to bun length
  • Round the edges slightly with a peeler for that “hot dog” look
  • Boil for 10–15 minutes (until just tender, not mushy)
  • Remove with tongs and set aside

Step 2: Marinate the Flavor

While carrots are cooking, whisk together all marinade ingredients in a shallow dish.

  • Add warm carrots to the marinade
  • Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours (this is key for flavor!)

Step 3: Cook & Char

Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.

  • Add 1 Tbsp olive oil or refined coconut oil
  • Place carrots in skillet with ~3 Tbsp marinade
  • Sauté 5–7 minutes, turning often
  • Let them char slightly for that classic BBQ feel

Serve immediately in buns with your favorite toppings!

🌭 Topping Ideas (Make It Your Own!)

ry topping your carrot dogs with:

  • Classic mustard + ketchup
  • Sauerkraut + spicy mustard
  • Fresh pico de gallo
  • Avocado + cilantro
  • BBQ sauce + grilled onions
  • Dairy-free chili for a hearty twist

💡 Pro Tip

Leftovers keep beautifully!

Store in the fridge for up to 5 days, and reheat in a skillet with a little marinade to keep them juicy and flavorful.

❤️ Final Thoughts

If you’re anything like me—someone who loves BBQ flavors but wants to feel good about what you’re eating—this recipe is a total win.

It’s:

  • Simple
  • Nourishing
  • Budget-friendly
  • And surprisingly so satisfying

Don’t let the idea of a “carrot hot dog” fool you… this one might just become your new summer favorite.

About Me

Hi, I’m Gwyn.

I’m a yoga teacher, cancer survivor, and someone who has learned that healing is rarely a straight path. Through the years, I’ve faced, unexpected health challenges and now an autoimmune disease and seasons that tested my faith in ways I never imagined. Yet through it all, God has faithfully met me with strength, hope, and grace.

I created this blog in 2016 to encourage anyone who feels like healing isn’t possible. Today, it has grown into a place where I share honest conversations about living well with chronic illness, embracing midlife, practicing gentle movement, nourishing our bodies, and finding joy even when life doesn’t go according to plan.

You’ll find encouragement, healthy recipes worth making, simple wellness tips, yoga, reflections on faith, and stories from my own journey. My hope is that when you leave this space, you feel a little less alone and a little more hopeful.

Whether you’re navigating health challenges, searching for balance, or simply looking for encouragement in this season of life, I’m so glad you’re here.

Welcome. I hope you’ll stay awhile.
