Home Improvements and How They Mirror Life

Lately, I’ve been neck-deep in home improvement projects. 🛠️ You know the drill—paint buckets stacked in corners, dust clinging to everything, and piles of stuff shoved into places they don’t belong. It’s messy, exhausting, and chaotic. But as I step back and look at every little change I’ve made, I realize just how much it transforms a space. By the end, the chaos subsides, and what’s left is a home that feels like… me.

Here’s the thing—working on ourselves? Personal growth? It’s exactly the same.

Growth is a Messy Process

Just like ripping up old carpet or taking down wallpaper, self-improvement often requires you to tear things apart before you can rebuild. Taking a good, hard look at the habits, thoughts, or wounds you’ve outgrown can be uncomfortable. Sometimes, it gets worse before it gets better.

But the mess isn’t the end of the story—it’s part of the process. Much like how a can of fresh paint brightens a room, facing those tough parts eventually clears the way for something new and beautiful to emerge.

Piece by Piece, It Comes Together

When you’re in the middle of renovating, it can feel overwhelming. You might focus too much on how much there is left to do and forget how far you’ve come. Personal growth feels the same way, doesn’t it?

Maybe you’ve started practicing mindfulness or made the leap to set better boundaries in your relationships. These small steps may not seem like much, but just like fixing that one squeaky door or adding new light fixtures, every small improvement adds up. Piece by piece, you’re creating a stronger, calmer, thriving version of yourself.

The Desire to Quit is Normal

I’ll be real—there were moments during my home projects when I just wanted to abandon everything and live with the way it was. Sometimes, it felt easier to accept the cracks and imperfections than to figure out how to fix them.

Sound familiar? Personal transformation is hard work, and there are going to be days when it feels like you’re not making any progress. But just because it feels slow and frustrating doesn’t mean you’re not moving forward.

Pausing is okay. Feeling tired is okay. Just don’t give up altogether. Progress—even the tiniest bit—is still progress.

Beauty in Imperfection

I’ll admit some parts of my house didn’t turn out exactly like I imagined. The throw pillows don’t perfectly match the rug, and the tile I picked out isn’t magazine-worthy. But you know what? It feels right. It feels like my space. And that’s what matters.

Growth is the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about becoming more you. The messy, real, authentic you that keeps evolving over time.

Here’s a quote that’s stuck with me during all this:

“What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall reap in the harvest of action.” — Meister Eckhart

Growth isn’t linear. It isn’t always pretty. But like transforming a house into a home, building the you that you want to be is worth every bit of hard work and every messy step.

Keep Going

If you’re in the middle of your own growth “renovations,” take a moment to step back. Look at what you’ve already done for yourself. Sure, there’s still work ahead, but there’s also progress behind you.

Maybe you’re not finished yet—and that’s okay. What matters is that you started. You’re showing up for yourself. You’re building a life that feels like you, one piece at a time.

Growth isn’t perfect, but it’s beautiful. And so are you.

Keep going. You’re creating something amazing. 🌱

Zucchini Lasagna 🍃🍅

What a fabulous weekend it’s been! With sunny skies and a beautiful Easter Sunday behind us, it’s time to keep the good vibes going despite the lingering clouds and rain. And what better way to warm up a drizzly day than with a cozy, hearty casserole? Enter Zucchini Lasagna—a perfect dish for a rainy Meatless Monday or any day when you’re craving something comforting but healthy!

Zucchini lasagna isn’t exactly new—you’ll find recipes galore online. But I wanted to throw my own twist into the mix and share this super simple version that I absolutely adore. If you’re a fan of lasagna, but want to skip the carb-laden noodles, this is your recipe. Plus, it’s naturally gluten-free, packed with veggies, and oh-so-yummy. Let’s get cooking!

Why Zucchini? 🥒

Okay, so why’s zucchini getting all the love in this recipe? Not only does it add bulk and structure like lasagna noodles, it’s also a nutritional superstar! Here’s why zucchini deserves a spot on your plate:

  • Low Carb Goodness: Zucchini is ideal for low-carb dieters (keto fam, this one’s for you!), with just 3g of carbs per 100g serving.
  • Rich in Nutrients: Packed with vitamins A, C, and antioxidants, zucchini helps boost your immune system and supports glowing skin.
  • Hydration Boost: This veggie is made up of 94% water, keeping you hydrated and your body happy. Bonus—it helps keep your dish light and less calorie-dense without sacrificing flavor.

Zucchini isn’t just about being healthy—it’s versatile and SO easy to work with. Slice it thin, layer it up, and voilà! It transforms into tender, melty lasagna goodness.

The Star of the Show—Homemade Pesto 🌿

The pesto in this recipe brings a gorgeous pop of flavor and color! If you make it at home (super easy, trust me!), you’re in for a treat. Plus, pesto is not just delicious, it’s loaded with benefits:

  • Healthy Fats: Made with olive oil and nuts, it’s a great source of heart-healthy fats.
  • Basil Power: Basil is rich in essential oils that act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation, and might even boost your mood.
  • Protein Punch: Thanks to pine nuts and parmesan, you’ll get a little extra protein to fuel your day.

Now, if you don’t have time to whip up your own, a store-bought pesto works just fine! But if you want to give homemade a go, my fool-proof pesto recipe is at the bottom of this post. 🍃

Easy & Cheesy Zucchini Lasagna Recipe (Serves 6)

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 medium zucchini
  • 3 cups baby spinach
  • 1-2 cups mozzarella cheese, grated (I like extra cheese 🧀)
  • 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • Marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade—your call!)
  • Pesto sauce (store-bought or see my recipe below)

Directions:

  1. Prep Your Veggies: Clean the zucchini and baby spinach. Pat them dry. Slice the zucchini into long, thin strips (pro tip: a mandoline makes this easier!).
  2. Layer It Up: Spread a small amount of marinara sauce on the bottom of a 13×9 pan. Layer zucchini strips on top, then spread a bit of pesto, add spinach, and sprinkle mozzarella and feta cheese. Repeat layering 1-2 more times.
  3. Top It Off: Finish with a final layer of marinara sauce and a sprinkle of cheese on top.
  4. Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until the zucchini is tender and the top is golden and bubbly!
  5. Cool & Serve: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. The wait is HARD, but it’s worth it. 😍

Want a crockpot version? Layer everything in your slow cooker the same way and cook on low for 4-6 hours.

Bonus Recipe! The Best Homemade Pesto

For an extra vibrant green pesto, blanch your basil leaves before blending. Here’s how to do it:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups fresh basil leaves (blanched, if desired)
  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ – ¾ cup pine nuts
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

Combine the basil, parmesan, pine nuts, and garlic in a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped. Slowly add the olive oil while blending to create a smooth paste. Add salt to taste, and you’re done!

This pesto is so good, you’re going to want to spread it on everything.

Final Thoughts & Tips

  • Adjust as Needed: Depending on your crowd, feel free to scale the ingredients up or down!
  • Experiment: Try using ricotta instead of feta, or add mushrooms to the mix for an extra earthy flavor.
  • Meal Prep Hero: Leftovers store beautifully in the fridge for up to 3 days, making this a meal-prep win.

Whether you’re low-carb, gluten-free, or just wanting a healthy twist on lasagna, this recipe will hit the spot. Not to mention, it brings a beautiful mix of flavors and textures that even pasta lovers will enjoy.

One Misstep Doesn’t Define the Dance

Life, much like a dance, is a series of steps—some light and graceful, others clumsy and offbeat. Here’s the truth many of us need to hear, especially on the hard days when we stumble and feel like giving up: one misstep doesn’t define the entire dance.

Sure, it might feel embarrassing when you trip over your own feet or miss a beat, whether it’s in a literal dance or in one of life’s many challenging routines. But what comes next matters far more than the stumble. Are you going to stop and dwell on the mistake, or are you going to pick yourself up and keep moving?

The Cheerleading Days – A Lesson in Grace and Grit

Back in high school, I was part of a cheerleading squad. If you’ve done cheer, you know it’s not all about pom-poms and pep—it requires focus, coordination, and a whole lot of teamwork. But here’s the thing about learning choreography as a team: mistakes are inevitable. I can’t count how many times I tripped, clapped off-rhythm, or forgot a move during practice. It happened to everyone. And our reactions to those setbacks shaped the entire experience.

When we made those missteps, there were usually two possible paths. If we laughed it off, encouraged each other, and tried again, magic would happen. The cheer would come together, and the energy would feel electric—we’d leave practice feeling unstoppable.

But if someone got frustrated—giving up because of one mistake—it was a different story. The whole team would feel the tension and struggle. Suddenly, the joy of the dance would be replaced with gritted teeth, teary eyes, and a looming sense of defeat. And if we didn’t finish the cheer? Nobody left happy.

The key difference in those moments was always our attitude and our willingness to listen. When we kept our focus on the head cheerleader and our coach, everything shifted. They brought us back to why we started in the first place and reminded us that a stumble didn’t ruin the whole routine. And that lesson? That stayed with me long after my cheerleading days ended.

Life’s Dance — Guided by a Heavenly Coach

Now, years later, I see how cheerleading was a metaphor for life. We’re all learning, practicing, and working through our own “routines,” whether it’s in relationships, careers, or personal growth. Mistakes happen—missteps, slip-ups, unexpected detours. They’re frustrating, sometimes painful, and often leave us questioning if we should even keep going. But the truth is, those moments are when growth is happening.

For me, I’ve found the secret to keeping my routine together is listening to my ultimate Coach. When I take my eyes off God—the One who guides us with wisdom and purpose—I start to stumble harder. I’ve also found strength in looking to my “Head Cheerleader” in life, Jesus—encouraging, empowering, and reminding me not to give up.

When I trust their guidance, those missteps that once felt so discouraging don’t break me anymore. They become part of the story—valuable moments of learning that bring new joy and strength when I keep moving forward. Life becomes less about achieving a perfect routine and more about staying in rhythm with hope, faith, and determination.

The Dance Doesn’t Stop

Here’s the takeaway, friend. A misstep in life—whether it’s a failed project, a missed opportunity, or even a broken relationship—isn’t the end. It’s just a moment, one beat in the whole song. The next step is always waiting for you. And when we choose grace over frustration, faith over fear, and perseverance over defeat, the dance becomes beautiful again.

Think about the last time you stumbled. Did you freeze up, or did you keep moving? What could your “dance” look like if you decided to trust the process and the One guiding you through?

You don’t have to finish life’s routine with perfect steps. You just have to finish it with heart.

Keep dancing—your best moments are just a step away.

Celebrate Spring with This Delicious Asparagus and Pasta Dish 🌱🍝

Yes, my foodie friends—we’ve officially made it to April! Spring is here, and with it comes an abundance of fresh, vibrant produce that makes our plates more colorful and our meals oh-so-divine. One of spring’s finest treasures? The glorious asparagus. 🥳

Before we jump into today’s recipe (trust me, it’s a keeper), let’s talk about why asparagus deserves a spot in your spring pantry.

Why We ♥️ Asparagus

Aside from its fresh, earthy flavor, asparagus is a nutritional powerhouse. Here’s why you should load up on this spear-shaped superfood:

  • Packed with Nutrients: High in vitamins A, C, E, and K, and loaded with folate. Basically, it’s like a multivitamin—but tastier. 😉
  • Low in Calories, High in Fiber: Perfect for keeping you full while supporting healthy digestion.
  • Rich in Antioxidants: It’s excellent for fighting off free radicals and keeping your immune system in top shape.
  • Great for Heart Health: Thanks to its fiber and potassium levels, asparagus helps lower cholesterol and regulate blood pressure.

But the best part? It’s in season right now, from February to June! That means the freshest, most flavorful asparagus varieties are waiting for you at your local market. Why not give a few of them a try in this quick and simple pasta dish?

Recipe Alert! Fresh and Easy Asparagus and Pasta 🎉

This dish is a total winner—it’s quick, easy, and can be completely customized to match your taste. Love lemon? Add more zest! Prefer extra crunch? Pile on the pine nuts. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 5 Tbsp of olive oil
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced (the more, the merrier in my book!)
  • 1–2 lbs of asparagus, washed and sliced into large bite-sized pieces
  • 1 Tbsp of lemon juice + lemon zest (hello, spring freshness 🍋)
  • 1/2 cup of pine nuts
  • 8 oz of your favorite pasta (save 1/4 cup of pasta water for this recipe!)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Grated parmesan cheese, for the perfect finishing touch 🧀

Instructions:

  1. Cook Your Pasta: Bring a pot of water to a boil, add the salt, and cook your pasta until it’s al dente (because no one likes mushy noodles). Save 1/4 cup of the pasta water before draining.
  2. Sauté the Veggies: Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat, toss in the minced garlic and asparagus, and sauté for about 8 minutes. The asparagus should be tender but still have that slight bite for the perfect texture.
  3. Add Some Zing: Add lemon juice, zest, pine nuts, salt, and pepper to your sautéed veggies. Stir and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  4. Bring It All Together: Combine your cooked pasta with the sautéed asparagus mixture. Add that reserved pasta water to help everything coat beautifully.
  5. Finishing Touches: Top your pasta with grated parmesan (and maybe a sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley). Serve, and enjoy your vibrant spring-inspired dish!

Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to experiment with this recipe. Want a bit of spice? Add red chili flakes. Craving a protein boost? Chickpeas or grilled tofu would pair perfectly.

Why This Dish is a Dream 💭

  • It’s fast. You’ve got dinner on the table in under 30 minutes.
  • It’s healthy. Packed with asparagus and clean ingredients, it’s a well-rounded meal.
  • It’s versatile. Whether you’re entertaining guests or meal-prepping for weekday lunches, this recipe has your back.

Learning to Love My Curls

To say I have curly hair feels like an understatement some days. What I actually have is a wild mane of frizz and curl—hair so voluminous and untamed that it would make any ’80s hairstylist green with envy. And don’t worry, I fully embraced that decade with gusto. My hair, partnered with a can of trusty Aqua Net, could spike effortlessly. Back then, I could roll out of bed, fluff my curls with my fingers, douse them in hairspray, and head out the door feeling like I looked amazing. Ah, those were the days.

But when I look back on old pictures, oh boy, it’s a different story. I see this little girl with wild some say (strawberry blond) curls bouncing every which way, and huge blue eyes sparkling with energy—sometimes too much energy. There I was, that lively, slightly chaotic kid sitting next to my sister, who was always so composed and serene. Yep, I was that family member—the one we all laugh at in old photo albums. My look said, “I’m ready to jump right out of this picture and into chaos.” It’s funny now, but at the time, it was tough.

My sweet mom would always tell me that my crazy curls “suited me.” I know she meant it lovingly, but for years, I saw my hair as something I had to fight—something that needed taming to make me acceptable. If I wasn’t battling my curls with every styling product known to humankind, I was chopping them off, desperately trying to manage them by eliminating them altogether. The cycle would repeat itself again and again.

It’s only now, after years of battling with my hair and, perhaps more poignantly, battling with myself, that I’ve started to make peace. Some days, I even lean into the chaos—letting the curls do their thing, wild and free. Honestly, my hair has become a bit like Forrest Gump’s famous box of chocolates—you never know what you’re gonna get. I’ve learned to find beauty in the uncertainty, and with that, I’ve started to see myself as beautiful, too.

For many years, I carried the idea that being the “spastic, untamed” girl wasn’t a good thing. Maybe you’ve felt the same in some way—a small part of you misunderstood or mislabeled by others, and eventually yourself. I allowed these past hurts and toxic thoughts to shape me, to convince me I wasn’t good enough. They stole my joy and dulled my sense of self-worth.

But here’s the truth I’ve come to hold close to my heart—my curls, my past, my frizz, my flaws, and yes, even my chaos, all make me who I am. Every twist, turn, and unwieldy curl is part of the story that God is writing for me. Those parts of me that seem too broken or too messy? I’ve learned to surrender them to God. He takes the wild, untamed mess and brings healing, shaping it into something beautiful.

It might sound funny, but I think of God as the ultimate curl serum. You know, the kind of serum that turns frizz into soft, defined curls you can’t help but run your fingers through. He transforms the parts of me that feel unmanageable into something soft, beautiful, and free.

Psalm 147:3 says it so simply yet so powerfully, “He heals the broken and binds up their wounds.” That has become my truth.

I no longer see my curls—or myself—as something that needs constant taming. Instead, I’m allowing space for my curls, my quirks, and my flaws. Where there was once frustration and embarrassment, there’s now grace and beauty. And maybe the next time I look at those old photos, I’ll laugh not because I’m the “crazy one” of the family, but because I’m finally the one who sees where true beauty lies.

What about you? What’s your “wild curl”—your thing that feels untamable or imperfect? Maybe giving it some grace will help you see it differently, too. After all, just like those curls, the messy, beautiful parts of life tell the best stories. 💛
