A Goat-head Weed

If you’ve never encountered this weed, consider yourself lucky—it likely means you live in a place where other plants thrive, thanks to a favorable climate or ample humidity. This resilient plant flourishes in barren, unforgiving conditions where little else can survive. For those familiar with it, you understand the frustration of watching it overrun your yard or, worse, the sharp pain of stepping on one of its spiky stickers—a sensation that makes walking on hot coals seem easy by comparison.IMG_20180813_075849670

As this weed grows, it spreads like the tentacles of an octopus, weaving its way into everything around it. It blooms small yellow flowers that might seem almost pretty to the untrained eye. But don’t be fooled—those cheerful blossoms mark the beginning of one of the nastiest thorns you’ll ever encounter.

These thorns, shaped like a goat’s head with sharp points at either end, are deceptively vicious. They can bring down the strongest person and puncture even the toughest bike tire. My children quickly learned to stick to the sidewalk because of these thorns, yet even there, safety isn’t guaranteed.

The other morning, I noticed one of these plants on my walk and thought, Where did that come from? I pride myself on staying on top of weeding, but there it was—a goat-head weed growing at the edge of my driveway near the sidewalk. I couldn’t believe I’d missed it. I made a mental note to pull it out as soon as I got home.

Later, as I started weeding, I realized something: I’d pulled this goat-head weed a few weeks ago but must have left part of the root behind. Now, it was back, larger and stronger than ever, with its yellow flowers ready to transform into sharp thorns destined to harm anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path.

This realization got me thinking about our thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, I have a lingering thought or unresolved feeling that’s just like that weed. I convince myself I’ve dealt with it, and for a while, everything feels fine. But then, out of nowhere, I feel hurt or anger rise up, and I wonder where it came from. That’s when I realize it’s my own “goat-head” thought—the root I left behind has regrown, stronger than before. If I don’t address it completely, it will grow into something harmful, shedding emotional thorns that can hurt not only me but those around me.

I’ve been slacking in tending to the weeds in both my yard and my mind, but I know I’m not alone in this struggle.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

—Proverbs 4:23

” Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

“Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds. – Ritu Ghatourey

Taste

If you have been around awhile reading my blog, you will know that I love food and great tasting food at that! So, when I was reading my Bible verse of the day

Psalm 34:8

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”

it hit different and if you look up the word taste in the dictionary, it is not only a noun, but also a verb, meaning to “perceive or experience the flavor of”. That’s it, how many times do I look around the world see the hurting and chaos or perhaps when you are going along and anything but good is happing in your life. You may have job lost, sickness or relationships ending. Making it really hard to see the good or the good around you.

But, when we choose to experience the flavor of life it looks so much different. It takes effart to see the goodness of God at times but when we choose the action to put in the work of tasting His goodness that’s when the wonderful flavor comes through. It’s like a recipe, the ingredients may not seem to go together at first but when we mix them all together and follow the instructions, we create something wonderful.

When we choose to experience life fully, with all its ups and downs, joys and struggles, it can be overwhelming. We are constantly bombarded with images of perfection and success, making us feel like we are always falling short. But if we take a step back and really taste what life has to offer, we will see that behind every challenge there is an opportunity for growth, behind every disappointment there is a lesson to be learned.

Just like in cooking, sometimes the best recipes come from unexpected combinations of ingredients. Similarly, our experiences in life may not always seem to make sense or align with our plans, but when we mix them all together and follow the instructions, we create something wonderful. We learn to appreciate the beauty in imperfection and find joy in the unexpected.

So instead of trying to control every aspect of our lives and striving for perfection, let’s embrace the messiness and unpredictability of life. Let’s savor each moment, even the not-so-perfect ones, because they all contribute to creating a unique and fulfilling journey. Just like a chef who takes risks in the kitchen and ends up with a masterpiece dish, let’s take risks in life and trust God that it will lead us to something amazing.

God’s Watching Out for Us, Even When We Don’t Realize It

They say ignorance is bliss, but I’m not so sure about that. I’ve had moments in life where I moved forward completely unaware of the dangers around me, and when I think back, it’s hard not to see God’s protective hand at work.

Years ago, when I lived in Northern California, I fell more in love with the outdoors. Long walks and hikes became my escape. The area had so much to offer, with trails winding through beauty that seemed untouched by time, or hilly neighborhoods on the edge of the wild with their beautiful homes. That was my happy place, especially after dealing with a teenager or a long day at the clinic where my mind would be full to bursting. On those walks, I practiced what I came to call “mindful walking”—the kind where you tune into every sound, every scent, every shift in the scenery.

I’d listen to the world around me. Whether it was others chatting in the distance or the gentle rustle of leaves in the wind, I loved immersing myself in the moment. Birdsong particularly fascinated me, and I’d try to identify the different calls as I went.

Once in a while, I’d hear a sharp, distinct sound. I couldn’t quite place it, but I’d think, “Wow, lucky me! A new bird I’ve never heard before!” It filled me with peace, wonder, and a quiet sense of gratitude. I mean, how amazing is it to experience something so simple and beautiful?

Well, here’s where things get interesting. It wasn’t until much later, years after I’d moved away, that I learned the truth about that “bird” I thought I was hearing. That sharp sound? It wasn’t a bird at all. It was the call of a mountain lion.

Yep, you read that right. A mountain lion.

Looking back, my stomach drops a little. There I was, walking completely relaxed, soaking in the beauty of nature, all while a potential predator wasn’t too far away. I shudder to think about how unaware I was of the danger. But more than that, I’m struck by how protected I was.

Isn’t life just like that, though? We go about our days, often without a care in the world, completely oblivious to threats that might be near us. Sometimes it’s danger we can’t see. Sometimes it’s trouble we don’t even recognize. It could’ve been a near-miss car accident, a health scare that turned out to be nothing, or a choice that spared us from consequences we didn’t know we were heading toward.

And yet, in those moments, God is there. Watching over us. Protecting us. Guiding us, even when we have no clue what we’ve been spared from.

It reminds me of Proverbs 15:3, which says, “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.”

That verse sticks with me like a shield of reassurance. God isn’t just watching passively; He’s actively caring for us. He sees the threats we’re blind to and steps in, often in ways we can’t see or comprehend at the time. And while we may not always feel His presence in the moment, stories like my “bird” encounter remind me that He’s there, working in the background, keeping us safe and steady.

It’s humbling, isn’t it? To realize that so much of what goes on in our lives is outside of our control. We plan, we prepare, we try our best to handle what comes our way. But there are countless things we can’t predict, avoid, or even see. And in those gaps, God steps in. His grace and protection fill the spaces we can’t reach.

The next time you find yourself reflecting, I encourage you to think about moments in your life where things could’ve gone differently…but didn’t. Those near misses. Those moments of unexpected peace. Maybe, just maybe, God was working quietly behind the scenes, looking out for you the way He’s always promised.

His eyes are everywhere, and His love is unfailing. And for that, I’m endlessly thankful.

Life Lessons From Jenga

I’m sure most people have either heard of or played the game of Jenga. For those who haven’t, it’s a delightful little game of wooden blocks where you build a tower, then take turns removing blocks from the bottom and carefully placing them on top. The goal? To avoid being the one who makes the tower crash.

The concept is simple, but the tension is palpable. The farther along you get, the wobblier the tower becomes. Hearts race, hands tremble, and everyone holds their breath as they watch. It’s a beautiful blend of strategy, patience, and just a little bit of luck.

I have such fond memories of playing Jenga with my kids when they were little. Sometimes we played by the book, and other times we made up our own rules, sprinkling in a bit of creative chaos. Regardless of how we played, the game would always follow the same rhythm. We’d start strong, carefully stacking and balancing, but it wouldn’t take long before our tower looked like an architectural tribute to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I remember the nervous anticipation, the whispered “Don’t crash, don’t crash…” as we teetered on the edge of chaos.

Recently, I found myself reflecting on Jenga and how much it resembles life. Hear me out.

Building Life Like a Jenga Tower

Life, much like a game of Jenga, starts strong. Early on, the pieces fit together well. The structure is stable. Maybe it’s because we’re focused on what truly matters or because we’ve got fewer “blocks” to manage. For me, this is when I center my life on God, the solid foundation that stabilizes everything else. At the start, everything feels balanced, and life is relatively calm.

But then, the busyness of life creeps in. Commitments pile up. Priorities start to shift. One by one, I begin pulling blocks from the foundation to stack them elsewhere. Work, family activities, personal goals, obligations, social events… each one feels so important in the moment, so I keep stacking. And stacking. And stacking.

Before I know it, my once-solid foundation is wobbly. The tower looks sturdy on the surface, but underneath? Chaos. My heart races, my stress piles up, and I live in fear that everything will eventually come crashing down.

And here’s the hard truth. If I don’t pause, if I ignore those racing thoughts and that quiet whisper reminding me to slow down, my tower does eventually crash. And when it does, I’m left staring at the pieces, wondering how I’ll rebuild.

A Better Way to Build

Here’s what I’m learning (sometimes very slowly): Life doesn’t have to feel like a game of Jenga. It doesn’t have to be a constant balancing act, one wrong move away from collapse. Instead of stacking higher and higher, I’m trying to build my life more like a set of Lincoln Logs.

Do you remember playing with Lincoln Logs as a kid? Unlike Jenga, Lincoln Logs aren’t about building precarious towers. They’re about creating something solid and intentional. A strong base is key, and each piece is carefully placed to support what’s around it. There’s no rush, no towering chaos. Just thoughtful, steady progress.

For me, that means putting God back at the center of my foundation. It means reprioritizing my life, placing the most important blocks first, and letting everything else fit naturally around them. It means learning to say “no” sometimes, even to good things, so that my life remains balanced and sustainable.

Am I perfect at this yet? Absolutely not. My instinct is still to stack, stack, stack. But I’m learning. And in those moments when I feel the wobble in my “tower,” I’m learning to pause, breathe, and remind myself that life isn’t meant to be precarious.

Reflect and Rebuild

If any of this resonates with you, I want to encourage you to take a moment to reflect. Is your life feeling wobbly right now? Are you stacking too many blocks and neglecting your foundation? It’s okay to admit that things feel unbalanced. That’s the first step toward rebuilding.

Even if your “life tower” has already crashed, take heart. Every piece scattered on the ground is an opportunity to start fresh. Build slowly. Build intentionally. And this time, build something solid.

Life isn’t Jenga, my friends. It’s okay to stop stacking. ❤️

Discover the Life-Changing Benefits of Daily Meditation

Meditation. For some, the word can feel intimidating or even a bit mystical, like it’s meant only for monks sitting cross-legged on mountain tops. But the truth is, meditation is neither complicated nor bizarre, nor is it something that goes against faith or spirituality.

Take a moment to reflect on this: even Jesus taught the importance of quiet reflection. The Bible is full of verses encouraging meditation, like Psalms 1:2, which says, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” If taking your thoughts to the Lord and reflecting on His ways isn’t meditation, then I don’t know what is.

Meditation is simply the art of quieting your mind and focusing your thoughts. It’s not about chanting or emptying yourself of meaning; it’s about slowing down, breathing deeply, and inviting peace into your day.

And trust me, as someone who’s entering new phases of life (yes, menopause and aging—I’m looking at you), meditation can become an incredible tool for finding balance, inner peace, and sanity, even when those hot flashes or sleepless nights try to knock us off course.

What Does the Bible Say About Meditation?

Before we jump into the benefits of meditation, I want to emphasize that it’s not in conflict with faith. The Bible actually celebrates meditation.

  • Psalms 19:14 encourages us, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”
  • Psalm 4:4 reminds us to, “Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still.”

Jesus himself often took moments of solitude to pray and reflect. Luke 5:16 says, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” If it was important for Jesus, how much more essential is it for us to carve out those little pockets of peace in our hectic lives?

Meditation, paired with prayer or scripture reflection, helps us align our thoughts with God’s purpose. It’s a practice that’s as spiritual as it is practical.

The Powerful Benefits of Daily Meditation

Now, why should you consider adding meditation to your daily routine? Especially if you’re navigating the unique challenges that come with aging or menopause, daily meditation can be a game-changer.

Here’s what it can do for you:

1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Stress doesn’t care how old you are or what stage of life you’re in. And as hormonal changes ramp up with menopause, anxiety and irritability can become frequent visitors. Meditation acts like a “reset button” for your mind. It helps calm the nervous system, balancing cortisol levels (that pesky stress hormone). Just 10–15 minutes of focused breathing and reflection can work wonders for finding calm amid life’s chaos.

2. Improves Sleep Quality

Insomnia and restless nights are common during menopause. (Anyone else trying to cool down under the fan at 3 AM?) Meditation can help. Focusing on deep breathing and mindfulness before bed allows your mind and body to relax, helping you drift into a deeper, more restorative sleep. If you’re unsure where to begin, try a scripture-based meditation on verses like Psalm 4:4 before hitting the sheets.

3. Supports Emotional Well-Being

Aging and menopause often invite emotional ups and downs into our lives. You might feel overwhelmed, nostalgic, or simply out of sorts. Regular meditation can help ground you. One beautiful aspect of meditation is that it allows us to pause and reflect on the blessings of the present moment. Psalms 143:5 says, “I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.” Isn’t that a beautiful reminder to focus on gratitude?

4. Offers Relief from Physical Symptoms of Aging

Believe it or not, meditation isn’t just for your mind; it’s for your body too. Studies show that meditation can lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and reduce inflammation. For those dealing with the physical toll of aging, this is a simple, natural way to nurture your body while calming your spirit.

5. Builds Resilience and Patience

Meditation helps you strengthen your ability to respond to life’s challenges with grace. Through daily practice, you become more resilient and patient, both with others and with yourself. And we all know menopause can test even the most patient among us!

How to Get Started with Meditation

If the idea of meditating feels overwhelming, don’t worry. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help ease you into the practice.

  1. Set Aside 5–10 Minutes

It doesn’t have to be long. Start with just five minutes a day. Mornings are great, but find a time that works best for you.

  1. Find a Quiet Space

Pick a place where you won’t be disturbed. It could be your favorite chair, your garden, or even your bed.

  1. Focus on Your Breath

Close your eyes, take a deep breath through your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this a few times to center yourself.

  1. Reflect on a Bible Verse

Consider meditating on a verse like Psalms 119:15, “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.” Reflect on its meaning and how it applies to your life.

  1. Be Present

Allow your thoughts to come and go without judgment. Acknowledge them, then refocus on your breathing or scripture verse. This practice gets easier with time.

  1. Finish with Gratitude

Before opening your eyes, think about one thing you’re grateful for. It’s the perfect way to step into the rest of your day.

Closing Thoughts

Meditation isn’t some “out there” concept. It’s a beautiful and practical way to nurture your mind, body, and spirit. From reducing stress to connecting you closer to God, the benefits are undeniable.

If you’ve been hesitant to try meditation, remember that it’s about slowing down and reconnecting—with yourself, your breath, or your faith. Take it one day, one moment, at a time. You deserve this time for peace and reflection.

And hey, I’d love to hear about your meditation experiences! Do you have a favorite scripture that helps you focus? Share it in the comments—I’m always looking for new inspiration.

Until next time, remember these words from Psalms 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord.”

Wishing you peace and stillness.

Improve Sleep with Yoga

Struggling to get a good night’s rest? You’re not alone. Whether you’re a busy professional, a yoga beginner, an insomniac, or navigating the hormonal shifts of menopause, sleep can often feel elusive. I get it. I’ve been there, staring at the ceiling, frustrated with my overactive brain. But I want to share something that’s made a real difference in my life: yoga.

Why Yoga Helps with Sleep

You’ve probably heard someone rave about how yoga “changes everything.” Well, when it comes to improving sleep, they aren’t exaggerating. Yoga combines movement, mindfulness, and breathwork to reduce stress, calm the mind, and prepare the body for rest. Scientific studies back this up, showing that yoga helps lower cortisol levels (hello, stress relief!) and increases melatonin production, the hormone that regulates sleep.

It’s not about intense poses or hours of practice. Even gentle stretches and breathing exercises can make a profound impact. The best part? Yoga is for everyone—from total beginners to seasoned yogis.

My Personal Journey with Yoga and Sleep

If you’re navigating the lovely chaos of menopause, you don’t need me to tell you that sleeping through the night can feel like winning the lottery. Between night sweats, hormone shifts, and the stress of life… let’s just say sleep isn’t always kind.

Personally, I’ve found yoga to be a game-changer. Is it a magical cure? Nope. But does it help me sleep better than I would without it? Absolutely.

During menopause, it’s easy to feel like your body is working against you, and honestly, the odds can feel stacked. Yoga, for me, is one of those small things I can control that pays off in big ways. Am I sleeping like I did at 25? No—but some nights, it’s shockingly close! Especially during the warmer months when my sleep tends to hit rock bottom.

Yoga gives me the chance to connect with my body, calm my mind, and signal to myself that it’s okay to rest.

Best Yoga Poses for Better Sleep

Feeling inspired to give yoga a try? Start with these beginner-friendly poses that are perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

1. Child’s Pose (Balasana)

This comforting pose gently stretches your lower back and hips, releasing tension and promoting relaxation. Bonus? It feels like giving yourself a hug.

How to do it:

  • Kneel on the floor, big toes touching, knees spread wide.
  • Lower your torso forward, resting your forehead on the mat.
  • Stretch your arms forward or keep them by your sides.
  • Breathe deeply and stay here for 1–3 minutes.

2. Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)

Perfect after a long day, this pose improves circulation, calms the nervous system, and eases racing thoughts.

How to do it:

  • Sit sideways against a wall. Swing your legs up as you lie back.
  • Adjust until your legs are vertical and your back is flat on the floor.
  • Rest your hands by your sides and breathe deeply for 5–10 minutes.

3. Forward Fold (Uttanasana)

This simple pose releases tension in your hamstrings and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping you relax.

How to do it:

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart.
  • Hinge forward from your hips, letting your torso hang towards the ground.
  • Bend your knees slightly if needed.
  • Stay here for 1–2 minutes, swaying gently if it feels good.

4. Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana)

This gentle twist releases tension in your lower back and soothes your nervous system.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back and hug your knees into your chest.
  • Drop both knees to one side, keeping your shoulders grounded.
  • Stretch your arms out in a “T” shape and turn your head to the opposite side.
  • Hold for 1–3 minutes on each side.

5. Savasana (Corpse Pose)

The ultimate relaxation pose! It helps you release the tension you didn’t even realize you were holding onto.

How to do it:

  • Lie flat on your back with your arms relaxed by your sides.
  • Close your eyes, soften your jaw, and breathe naturally.
  • Stay for 5–10 minutes, focusing on the rise and fall of your breath.

Build a Routine That Works for You

The beauty of yoga is its flexibility (pun intended). You don’t need a fancy studio or an hour-long session to reap the benefits. Even 10–15 minutes before bed can work wonders.

Here’s a simple yoga routine to try before you hit the hay:

  1. Start with Child’s Pose to ground yourself.
  2. Move into a Forward Fold to release any lingering tension.
  3. Transition to Legs-Up-the-Wall and breathe deeply.
  4. Finish with Savasana for complete relaxation.

Set the mood by dimming the lights, playing calming music, and putting your phone on “Do Not Disturb.”

Why Not Start Tonight?

Whether you’re battling insomnia, trying to manage stress after a long workday, or working through menopause-related sleep struggles like me, yoga can be such a helpful tool. Start small, stay consistent, and trust the process.

And remember, the goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress. Your body will thank you for every little bit of care you give it.

“Yoga is the perfect opportunity to be curious about who you are.” – Jason Crandell

If you’re still unsure where to begin, many online resources and beginner-friendly yoga apps can guide you. Or, simply roll out a mat, take a deep breath, and listen to your body. It knows what you need.

Sleep better, feel better, and find your balance—with a little help from yoga. 🌙

When Ordinary Becomes Exceptional

Ordinary. The dictionary defines it as “having no special ability, quality, or purpose.” Ouch, right? It’s not exactly the word anyone rushes to label themselves with. But, for most of my life, I believed that word summed me up perfectly.

I know what you might be thinking. Wow, way to have low self-esteem. But hear me out, because this is about more than just a definition in the dictionary.

I’ve always thought of myself as ordinary. I’m not what you might call unattractive, but I wouldn’t describe myself as beautiful either. I’ve always struggled to keep weight on, which, trust me, sounds like a blessing until you realize there’s no muscle tone underneath it. My intelligence? Average (and that’s me being kind to myself because, honestly, on some days, I feel like it dips below that line). I can be crafty, but nothing Pinterest-worthy. I can sketch, but you won’t see my work in a gallery. And the list goes on.

For years, this ordinary feeling nagged at me like a pebble in my shoe. I couldn’t settle for just being okay at something. I had to be the best. I became an overachiever, wearing perfectionism like armor for a battle I couldn’t win.

  • If I studied, I had to get a 4.0.
  • If I ran, I had to beat my previous time.
  • When I became a wife and mom, I wasn’t content with just doing my best. I obsessed over being perfect. Cooking. Cleaning. Parenting. Everything had to be above and beyond.

Looking back, it’s no small mystery why my marriage didn’t last. My husband had his own struggles, sure, but how exhausting it must have been to live with someone trying so hard to be anything but ordinary.

The Problem with Perfection

For years, I lived in this loop. If I didn’t hit the impossible standard of “the best,” I’d quit. Or worse, I’d work myself to the point of total burnout trying to make it happen.

This cycle hurt so many people I love. And in truth, it hurt me even more. How many times did I pour my all into something, only to collapse in frustration when I couldn’t meet my own expectations? I spent years breaking myself in half, trying to prove I was more than average, more than just ordinary.

The irony? I thought imperfection was failure. But I didn’t understand… ordinary isn’t failure.

The Freedom in Failure

John F. Kennedy once said, “Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly.”

And yeah, you better believe I failed miserably. Over and over again.

But you know what? I’m grateful for every single one of those failures. They were growing pains, necessary stepping stones to something far greater.

Because here’s the thing I’ve learned about failure, about being ordinary, about not always standing out in the crowd. Every crack, every flaw, every stumble has shaped who I am today.

The Potter and the Clay

One of my favorite verses is this one from Isaiah 64:8:

“Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”

Think about that for a second. We are clay in the hands of the ultimate creator.

I picture myself as a simple gray clay pot. Nothing too fancy, no bold designs or flashes of color. Just me, plain and unassuming. But in the hands of the potter? Oh, I am so much more. The purpose, the meaning, the exceptional beauty lies not in how extravagant the design of the pot is, but in what the pot is shaped to hold.

It’s taken me years to understand this. To know down to my soul that being “ordinary” doesn’t mean I lack special qualities or purpose. It means I have a foundation that can be molded, built upon, transformed.

You Are Exceptional

If you’ve ever felt like you’re only ordinary, like there’s nothing extraordinary about you, I want you to know this truth. You are unique. You are exceptional. Not because of how perfect you are, or what you’ve achieved, or whether anyone sees you as extraordinary.

You are exceptional because you were shaped with care and love by a creator who knows you deeply.

And here’s the best part about being clay in the potter’s hands: it doesn’t matter where you start. It doesn’t matter if you feel like you’re just an ordinary pot. What matters is your willingness to be molded, to be shaped through every failure, every setback, every gray and messy moment.

From Ordinary to Strength

I no longer aim for perfection. Instead, I aim for growth, for purpose, for connection. Being “ordinary” isn’t a limitation; it’s a blank slate, a vessel for something extraordinary.

If you’re out there feeling like just another face in the crowd, feeling like the word “ordinary” defines you, I hope you’ll take this to heart. Your cracks and imperfections aren’t flaws to be hidden; they’re the spaces where your light shines through.

It’s a long road to let go of perfection, to learn to accept and even love being ordinary. But once you do? That’s when life gets extraordinary.

Take it from someone who’s spent years learning this the hard way. Ordinary doesn’t lessen you. It makes room for your growth, for your incredible potential, for the beauty and strength that has always been inside you.

Life Lessons from Undercover Boss

This past Saturday, all I wanted was pizza and a cozy binge-watch session of Gilmore Girls. Totally out of character for me. Don’t get me wrong—I adore the show—but curling up and just watching TV for hours isn’t something I usually enjoy doing. Still, I was ready for that couch-potato life.

But then Netflix betrayed me. No matter how many times I tried, it just refused to load. And as someone who isn’t exactly tech-savvy (and who lacks the patience to deal with finicky apps), I gave up and decided to see what was on regular TV instead. That’s when I stumbled upon an Undercover Boss marathon.

Now, I haven’t really watched Undercover Boss much before, but it felt like the right choice for a lazy evening. It was interesting enough to hold my attention without requiring too much brainpower. What surprised me was how deeply the episodes impacted me.

Behind the Bad Wigs

First off, can we talk about the disguises? Honestly, how do people not see through those things? The bad wigs and awkward fake mustaches are dead giveaways! Yet, out of the several episodes I watched, only two people actually figured out that the “new trainee” they were working with was the CEO in disguise. Still, I couldn’t help but laugh and wonder how well I’d do with that kind of charade.

But what stuck with me wasn’t the disguises. It was the way these CEOs stepped into lives and situations so far outside their usual routines. Watching them perform menial labor alongside their employees gave me a whole new perspective. You could see the joy in the CEOs’ eyes when they met people who genuinely cared about their work. Those employees often treated their jobs with respect, even if the work itself was tough or thankless. On the flip side, it was fascinating (and a little cringe-worthy) to witness the interactions with employees who clearly didn’t have a great attitude or work ethic.

Here’s the thing, though—even when employees were struggling, the CEOs didn’t tear them down (at least not in the episodes I saw). Instead, they tried to understand their stories, their frustrations, and even worked with them to help them improve. It wasn’t always successful, but I found that effort to be really touching.

Tears and Revelations

Of course, the endings got me every time. Watching the hardworking employees get well-deserved rewards left me teary-eyed, without fail. Whether it was a vacation, financial support, or a promotion, seeing their dedication pay off was so heartwarming. And yes, I admit I also felt a sense of justice when those who slacked off or didn’t treat their jobs seriously were held accountable.

What struck me most, though, was how these CEOs chose to step into the lives of their employees—not as the “big boss” in a fancy suit, but as someone willing to get their hands dirty and share the same struggles.

A Divine Parallel

As I crawled into bed that night, my mind kept replaying those moments from the show. But then a thought hit me like a lightning bolt: Undercover Boss had given me this unexpected reminder of Jesus.

Think about it. Jesus is the ultimate “CEO,” right? The Son of God, ruler of all creation, divine beyond our comprehension. And yet, He came to Earth in disguise—not as a king or powerful ruler with all the trappings, but as an ordinary person. There were no extras, no special effects. Just humility, hard work, and so much love.

If you think about the people He interacted with while He walked the earth, it’s kind of like Undercover Boss. Jesus met people where they were, saw their struggles, and extended grace. He shared hope with those who genuinely cared and sought Him. And as inspiring as that is, there’s also a convicting side to it. Not everyone recognized Him for who He really was. Some rejected Him or were too distracted by their own lives to see past the “disguise.”

Scripture teaches us that, one day, Jesus will reveal Himself fully. And just like those reveals on Undercover Boss, there will be outcomes. The rewards will be glorious for those who worked faithfully. But for those who failed to recognize Him or simply didn’t care, the ending might not be quite as sweet.

A Lesson in Grace

What really amazes me is the patience Jesus has for us, even when we’re not the “hardworking employees” we should be. Even when we ignore Him, question Him, or fail to trust Him, His grace remains. He doesn’t just walk away from us. His goal is for us to grow, to ask for forgiveness, and to live a life that honors Him.

I couldn’t help but think of this Bible verse as I reflected on the show and Jesus’ life on earth:

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

– 2 Peter 3:9

Jesus is rooting for all of us, just like those CEOs rooted for their employees. He isn’t here to punish for the sake of punishing. He wants us to succeed, to thrive, and to be the best versions of ourselves.

What Role Will You Play?

At the end of the day, we all play a role in this cosmic “episode.” Are we the reliable, diligent employees who give 100% in everything we do, even when no one’s watching? Or are we sliding by, hoping no one notices when we slack off?

The good news is, regardless of where we are right now, there’s still time to rewrite the story. Time to recognize the “Undercover Boss” in our lives and take steps to live in a way that honors Him.

What would Jesus see if He worked beside you today?

Life is full of unexpected reminders, and sometimes they come from the most unlikely places—even a Saturday night TV marathon. But if there’s one thing I took away from Undercover Boss, it’s this beautiful parallel to God’s love, grace, and patience.

And if you’re wondering where to start, take a moment to reflect, to seek Him out, and to ask how you can be a better “employee” in His grand enterprise. You might be surprised by how much He reveals to you.

Home Improvements and How They Mirror Life

Lately, I’ve been neck-deep in home improvement projects. 🛠️ You know the drill—paint buckets stacked in corners, dust clinging to everything, and piles of stuff shoved into places they don’t belong. It’s messy, exhausting, and chaotic. But as I step back and look at every little change I’ve made, I realize just how much it transforms a space. By the end, the chaos subsides, and what’s left is a home that feels like… me.

Here’s the thing—working on ourselves? Personal growth? It’s exactly the same.

Growth is a Messy Process

Just like ripping up old carpet or taking down wallpaper, self-improvement often requires you to tear things apart before you can rebuild. Taking a good, hard look at the habits, thoughts, or wounds you’ve outgrown can be uncomfortable. Sometimes, it gets worse before it gets better.

But the mess isn’t the end of the story—it’s part of the process. Much like how a can of fresh paint brightens a room, facing those tough parts eventually clears the way for something new and beautiful to emerge.

Piece by Piece, It Comes Together

When you’re in the middle of renovating, it can feel overwhelming. You might focus too much on how much there is left to do and forget how far you’ve come. Personal growth feels the same way, doesn’t it?

Maybe you’ve started practicing mindfulness or made the leap to set better boundaries in your relationships. These small steps may not seem like much, but just like fixing that one squeaky door or adding new light fixtures, every small improvement adds up. Piece by piece, you’re creating a stronger, calmer, thriving version of yourself.

The Desire to Quit is Normal

I’ll be real—there were moments during my home projects when I just wanted to abandon everything and live with the way it was. Sometimes, it felt easier to accept the cracks and imperfections than to figure out how to fix them.

Sound familiar? Personal transformation is hard work, and there are going to be days when it feels like you’re not making any progress. But just because it feels slow and frustrating doesn’t mean you’re not moving forward.

Pausing is okay. Feeling tired is okay. Just don’t give up altogether. Progress—even the tiniest bit—is still progress.

Beauty in Imperfection

I’ll admit some parts of my house didn’t turn out exactly like I imagined. The throw pillows don’t perfectly match the rug, and the tile I picked out isn’t magazine-worthy. But you know what? It feels right. It feels like my space. And that’s what matters.

Growth is the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about becoming more you. The messy, real, authentic you that keeps evolving over time.

Here’s a quote that’s stuck with me during all this:

“What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall reap in the harvest of action.” — Meister Eckhart

Growth isn’t linear. It isn’t always pretty. But like transforming a house into a home, building the you that you want to be is worth every bit of hard work and every messy step.

Keep Going

If you’re in the middle of your own growth “renovations,” take a moment to step back. Look at what you’ve already done for yourself. Sure, there’s still work ahead, but there’s also progress behind you.

Maybe you’re not finished yet—and that’s okay. What matters is that you started. You’re showing up for yourself. You’re building a life that feels like you, one piece at a time.

Growth isn’t perfect, but it’s beautiful. And so are you.

Keep going. You’re creating something amazing. 🌱

One Misstep Doesn’t Define the Dance

Life, much like a dance, is a series of steps—some light and graceful, others clumsy and offbeat. Here’s the truth many of us need to hear, especially on the hard days when we stumble and feel like giving up: one misstep doesn’t define the entire dance.

Sure, it might feel embarrassing when you trip over your own feet or miss a beat, whether it’s in a literal dance or in one of life’s many challenging routines. But what comes next matters far more than the stumble. Are you going to stop and dwell on the mistake, or are you going to pick yourself up and keep moving?

The Cheerleading Days – A Lesson in Grace and Grit

Back in high school, I was part of a cheerleading squad. If you’ve done cheer, you know it’s not all about pom-poms and pep—it requires focus, coordination, and a whole lot of teamwork. But here’s the thing about learning choreography as a team: mistakes are inevitable. I can’t count how many times I tripped, clapped off-rhythm, or forgot a move during practice. It happened to everyone. And our reactions to those setbacks shaped the entire experience.

When we made those missteps, there were usually two possible paths. If we laughed it off, encouraged each other, and tried again, magic would happen. The cheer would come together, and the energy would feel electric—we’d leave practice feeling unstoppable.

But if someone got frustrated—giving up because of one mistake—it was a different story. The whole team would feel the tension and struggle. Suddenly, the joy of the dance would be replaced with gritted teeth, teary eyes, and a looming sense of defeat. And if we didn’t finish the cheer? Nobody left happy.

The key difference in those moments was always our attitude and our willingness to listen. When we kept our focus on the head cheerleader and our coach, everything shifted. They brought us back to why we started in the first place and reminded us that a stumble didn’t ruin the whole routine. And that lesson? That stayed with me long after my cheerleading days ended.

Life’s Dance — Guided by a Heavenly Coach

Now, years later, I see how cheerleading was a metaphor for life. We’re all learning, practicing, and working through our own “routines,” whether it’s in relationships, careers, or personal growth. Mistakes happen—missteps, slip-ups, unexpected detours. They’re frustrating, sometimes painful, and often leave us questioning if we should even keep going. But the truth is, those moments are when growth is happening.

For me, I’ve found the secret to keeping my routine together is listening to my ultimate Coach. When I take my eyes off God—the One who guides us with wisdom and purpose—I start to stumble harder. I’ve also found strength in looking to my “Head Cheerleader” in life, Jesus—encouraging, empowering, and reminding me not to give up.

When I trust their guidance, those missteps that once felt so discouraging don’t break me anymore. They become part of the story—valuable moments of learning that bring new joy and strength when I keep moving forward. Life becomes less about achieving a perfect routine and more about staying in rhythm with hope, faith, and determination.

The Dance Doesn’t Stop

Here’s the takeaway, friend. A misstep in life—whether it’s a failed project, a missed opportunity, or even a broken relationship—isn’t the end. It’s just a moment, one beat in the whole song. The next step is always waiting for you. And when we choose grace over frustration, faith over fear, and perseverance over defeat, the dance becomes beautiful again.

Think about the last time you stumbled. Did you freeze up, or did you keep moving? What could your “dance” look like if you decided to trust the process and the One guiding you through?

You don’t have to finish life’s routine with perfect steps. You just have to finish it with heart.

Keep dancing—your best moments are just a step away.
